John Kovacs is the founder of Mile High Human Resources, a Denver-based HR consulting firm that works with small-size companies of 5-300 associates. Its growing list of clients includes accounting, musical instruments, technology, health care, trucking, oil and gas, and civil engineering firms. Mile High custom-tailors people solutions to the client’s need and satisfaction. This can take the form of anything ranging from help with recruiting, training, turnover and retention, arbitration, labor relations, severance, unemployment, workplace violence prevention, employee engagement or any other area. 

John has 20+ years of blue-chip HR experience with major firms such as Sears Roebuck, Home Depot, and Johns Manville. In his most recent role, John spent 8 years as Regional HR Manager for Sears Roebuck and led a team of three who were responsible for 69 units in 16 states across 5 time zones and supported a P&L of $114 million. John’s team dropped over $11 million onto Sears’ bottom line and he travelled approximately 50,000 miles a year.

John holds a Master of Labor and Industrial Relations (MLIR) from Michigan State University and the highest-level HR certifications one may obtain- the Senior Professional of Human Resources (SPHR) from HRCI and the Senior Certified Professional (SCP) from SHRM.

John earned his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and interned in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. as well as for Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldrige.

John is member of the Denver Chamber of Commerce, the West Metro Chamber of Commerce and serves on its Local Government Advisory Council (LGAC). He is also a past board member of the Denver Gay Professionals and past HRC Federal Club Member. He lives with his family in the Evergreen area and is proud to claim Zebulon Pike as a distant ancestor. John lost both of his parents at a young age and inherited their WWII convictions of hard work, earning, saving and investing for the future.
