In her impressive 36 year tenure at the helm of Cortez Construction, Carla M. Barela has had many "firsts" and has paved her own road. Carla spent 12 years as a nun in the order of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, Ohio (1960-1972) during which she earned a BA from Mt. Saint Joseph College. She has also earned a MA in Music Education from CU Boulder. Carla now serves as CEO/President of Cortez Construction Company.

Cortez Construction Company, based in Pueblo, CO has paved its own unique diverse road as well. Founded in 1972 by Albino Cordova and Eugene R. Mares, Cortez Construction expanded its services to include building single family homes 1978. This is the same year that Carla became a partner of the business and continues to lead the company, mission and values established by the founding partners along with co-owner Daniel Cordova, Corporate Secretary. The mission is to safely, accurately and reliably deliver all projects in an environment that benefits their clients, employees and the communities they serve. They know that their reputation is only as good as the results of their last job. That’s why they pride themselves on a results- oriented approach. By taking their team’s collective experience, Cortez Construction has created a systemic, highly efficient approach to keep their construction projects on track and under budget. Carla calls it “Construction with a Conscience”; “A building is not complete until every door hangs properly, every window opens correctly and everything is built according to plan. It has to look, feel and smell right. We just won’t settle for anything less. I love making blueprints on paper come to life in real buildings that positively impact the community”, shares Carla.

Another early milestone came in 1982 as Cortez Construction completed its first Commercial Project to include the Veteran’s Nursing Home in Florence, Colorado. Cortez Construction continued to pave the way and was accepted in the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) 8a Program in 1984.
Through the assistance of the SBDC Colorado Leading Edge Program and additional SBDC consulting and training programs, Carla continued to build the business, clientele and become recognized as one of the premiere construction companies in Southern Colorado
Carla and co-owner Daniel have spent countless hours attending SBDC and other community offered training programs over the years, above and beyond their hands-on skills development as part of their business continuous quality improvement. “Cortez Construction has benefitted immensely from the services of the SBDC - classes, seminars, individual sessions, and workshops. Business issues are changing all the time and the SBDC helps Cortez keep up with them so we are informed and professional. We value their services and couldn't do without them”, expresses Carla. Staying ahead of trends and demand and growing in the ever-changing market to meet community needs and project expectations, Cortez Construction has sustained a trusted business partnership with clients they work with. In addition to graduating from the SBA 8a Program, Cortez Construction is Hubzone Certified, Economic Disadvantage Business Certified, and Woman-Owned Certified. They were recognized in 1994 as Small Business of the Year, Carla was recognized as the Business Woman of the Year by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in 2002, and they received the honor of being recognized with the Public Works Project Award for Engineering/Construction Management from APWA in 2012.

For more than 36 years, Cortez Construction Company has provided construction services to large scale clients including the Colorado Department of Corrections, US Air Force Academy, Federal Aviation Administration, US Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Carson and a variety of others that have benefited from their expertise and proven track record. No one works harder, works smarter and works later to get the job done than Carla
