Melissa decided several years ago to put her talents to work for her by combining her artistic nature with her love of helping people create a positive self-image. She attended Trinidad State Junior College in Alamosa and has been a licensed stylist and cosmetologist for the past 5 years. After working for several salons in Alamosa and out of her home in Antonito, she made a big leap and opened “Hot Heads Hair & Nail Salon” in downtown Antonito.
“My passion is working with people and providing excellent service,” says Melissa, now 34. “I am especially satisfied when I see how great my clients look and knowing their confidence has somehow been positively affected by my work”.
Hot Heads is setting the pace for other salons in Antonito and Conejos County by offering unique services. Melissa’s services include waxing, manicures, pedicures and acrylic nails along with her full service hair salon. By being particularly picky about sanitary conditions in all aspects of her operation, she feels it sets inspires confidence in her services. Within the first year of operation she’s expanded to include another chair for an additional stylist in the salon and it is now occupied by stylist Jose Vasquez.
By keeping on top of current trends in fashion, Melissa aims to bring her clientele the very latest styles and services. Acrylic nails are especially unique in her salon. Not only does she have the usual array of pre-designed nails, she also creates customized art work on acrylics, some bearing the detail of miniature paintings.
Melissa’s long term goals are to stay busy, add new equipment and grow all areas of service she now offers. The location she chose for her business is an advantage and will help her do just that. Located on a side street just off of the Main Street through Antonito, the building has good exposure to through traffic. Only the expanse of a small parking lot separates her from the busy Hwy 285 that runs the length of Antonito. Her strategically placed sign on the side of the building stands out and draws attention to the building and business. Also located in the same area are several new businesses that are sparking traffic and interest in the small community of Antonito.
Having heard of the SBDC through word of mouth, Melissa has taken advantage of counseling to ensure her business was registered properly with the state and that she is collecting and reporting sales tax correctly.
