Their journey began with the loss of employment for the Newman’s son Jacob. He is a chef by calling. After working 5 years as a chef for another company, the company closed their doors without warning. With an unemployment rate of over 4%, there was not an immediate employment opportunity for Jacob. On a fluke, or divine intervention one might say, Jacob said to his Mom Sonja, “Mom, why don’t we open the old Mrs. T’s as a restaurant?” That was the beginning of Jak’s Joint.

A friend had mentioned to me that we could get advice and/or loan information from the Small Business Development Center located at Otero Junior College. That is when we met with the SBDC State Director.
The State Director was invaluable with her extensive knowledge and suggestions
The SBDC helped us complete a study that gave us direction on if our restaurant would be a success in Las Animas. Our varied menu was definitely a need in our City.

We were inspired. We wanted a place where you could come in, sit down, talk to the neighbor you haven’t seen for a while and relax. That was the latter part of August 2014. Everything came together for us October 31. We opened Jak’s Joint on November 1, 2014 with a wealth of support from our community.

In addition to being able to continue Jacob’s love for cooking, we were able to employ four of the people who were also affected by the closure (Irene Garcia, Carol Martinez, AJ Miller-Cook and Bryan Miller). We were even able to add some new faces (Tiana Garcia, Ryan Burke, Lerrisa Sandoval-Newman and Josh Newman).
"It has been wonderful to be so blessed to open our family owned restaurant and employ those who not only lost their jobs but to create more as well."
