Jodi Hughes worked for the same employer at two different restaurant locations for twenty-four years, so when word got out that she was going to open her own restaurant in the same downtown La Junta, CO, location where her career began, the anticipation was high.

Jodi’s Grill opened in early January, 2010, at 208 Santa Fe Avenue. When asked about the excitement of owning her own restaurant, Jodi exclaimed, “I don’t feel like I’m going to a new place. I feel like I’m coming back to where it all began.”

Jodi’s Grill occupies approximately 3500 square feet and can seat more than 100 people. Jodi has become well known over the years in this small community of approximately 8,500 people for her pepper steak and homemade blue cheese salad dressing; two mainstays that have remained a part of her menu.

Jodi downplayed the talk of opening her own restaurant, but when she approached the Small Business Development Center at Otero Junior College in La Junta about her dream, her success in the past made it a perfect fit for the area. The SBDC worked with Jodi on her business plan and discussed various funding options that may be available to her.

The SBDC involved the local economic development director who suggested the location, being vacated by a previous tenant, as the perfect spot.

So with a lot of elbow grease, a little time, and the support of the community, Jodi was able to open her restaurant in “short order” …some twenty four years after (and where) it all began.
