Keri Mardis is another Colorado entrepreneur living her dream. She’s always wanted to have her own business and now it has become a reality. It would be hard to find a more beautiful place than South Fork, Colorado, but her timing could not have been worse. The town was evacuated due to nearby forest fires and as the smoke billowed down across town, officials decided to close down the town for everyone’s safety. Keri had barely hung out her Open sign for Keri’s Kutz Salon and was then forced to leave, taking only her few personal possessions. As she worried also about her home and family, she wondered what would become of her newly remodeled place, located next to Team Murphy Realty at 29935 West Highway 160. She was in the midst of putting in new flooring and had already painted and put up other décor, fixtures and equipment. Luckily for Keri and for the other businesses, residents, and visitors in South Fork, the firefighters were diligent and the weather cooperated. The town re-opened without major incidents or damage.

“The consultants at the SBDC were helpful in many ways”

Keri sought the assistance of the SBDC (719-589-3682) because she wasn’t sure what was exactly required to get business going. New business owners need to register their legal entity with the Secretary of State and obtain a sales tax license, learn about bookkeeping practices as well as make marketing and branding decisions. “The consultants at the SBDC were helpful in many ways,” said Keri. “I hope to take some future workshops or business classes that they offer. They were so accommodating and made the process painless as I opened up my new shop.” Keri grew up in Strasburg, CO and attended Adams State University in Alamosa, CO. Keri loved living in the San Luis Valley so much that she decided to relocate to South Fork in 2006.
The fires have subsided and now it’s time to get the word out that South Fork is open for business and is as beautiful as always. Her business is steadily increasing thanks to word of mouth and her guerilla advertising tactics. She took fliers around town and the response has been tremendous. She is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday – Saturday and welcomes walk-ins.
