Seventeen years ago, Le Cordon Bleu-trained Lisa Hemphill had an idea. She wanted to combine the quality of European truffles with the flavor and texture of American brownies. Truffnies, a “magic combination of a truffle and a brownie” were born. Through the South Metro Denver Small Business Development Center, Lisa has been working to introduce her dream product to the public.
Lisa first came to the South Metro Denver SBDC in 2011 for business plan assistance. There she attended one-on-one consulting to evaluate her sales strategy and create a business plan, as well as review her lending options.
“Our consultant was very helpful in connecting us with potential lenders and identifying timely sources of funds,” said Truffnies CFO James Nelms. Through SBDC recommendations, Lisa and James attended the South Metro SBDC Lender’s Panel. They were grant semifinalists at a Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream speed coaching event with SBDC partner Accion. “The SBDC has so many programs…and if you connect with the right people in the SBDC or SBA, you can make connections to other avenues,” said Lisa. “The resources at the SBDC are invaluable for a small business; it fills the void and brings free resources together for business owners who can’t afford it,” added James.
Since 2011, Truffnies have won numerous awards at the Broadmoor, Winter Park, and Colorado chocolate festivals. The product has also been featured in Her Life Magazine, 9 News, the Denver Post, and served backstage at “Dancing with the Stars,” and included in the America Cinematique Awards (ACA) gift bags.

Truffnies has seen a 200% increase in sales in the last two years. Lisa believes their business will double in the next year. The chocolates can currently be purchased in two local retailers, Abloom Florist (Highlands Ranch) and Heritage Cards and Gifts (Centennial). They can be purchased at the Highland’s Ranch Farmer’s Market and will soon be sold in Compleat Lifestyles Gourmet & Gifts (Centennial).
One of the unique aspects of Truffnies is product personalization. For client appreciation gifts, ribbon toppers can be embossed with the sponsor company’s name and logo. For wedding or event favors, flowerlike boxes include a personalized message. They are also sold in wine bottle hangers and gift sets.
Lisa is constantly developing new products, including a new gluten-free line. She acknowledges the difficulty in creating a gluten-free product that won’t sacrifice flavor, however, she has discovered flour that “tastes wonderful” and utilized it to create four gluten-free products. She also recently created an award-winning caramel apple cinnamon Truffnie, as well as a white chocolate cranberry version.
