Rio Grande Pharmacy
Full-service pharmacy available in Del Norte
650 Grande Ave. Del Norte, CO 81132
Rick and Angie moved to Del Norte 7 years ago. Angie was a pharmacist at the SLV Regional Medical Center for the past 6 ½ years. Rick recently retired from being a radiology technician at the Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte. From the beginning of their residency here, they fell in love with the town and with the idea of a store that could provide full service for the community. When the drug store came up for sale at the end of last year, Rick and Angie got busy with the necessary paperwork.
They took the words to heart of Donna Wehe of the Small Business Development Center, who kept reminding them, “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.”
This pharmacy is the oldest continuously operating business in Del Norte. It was first started in 1887 by John Shaffer. The original safe in the back of the store still bears his name. The owners after him were Charles Donnen, Smiles Adams (1940’s) and Frank Connell, who operated the business since 1969. The store moved to this location in 1927. The drugstore is getting a facelift, but will retain its historical character. The west wall still holds the soda fountain mirror and cabinetry, and the Campbells plan to refurbish and once again open the soda fountain, displaying some of the antiques and artifacts from the early years of the business.
Rick and Angie want to express their appreciation for all those who helped them in getting into the store of their dreams: Karla Wiescamp, their realtor; Traci Holmes and Mike Hurst at Del Norte Federal Bank for their continuous support and promotion of the community; Dick Davidson at the Development Resource Group; and Donna Wehe & Deanne Elliott of the SBDC. The SBDC offers free and confidential counseling and gave the Campbells help with developing a business plan, registering their business, financial record keeping and marketing ideas.
Rick and Angie, along with their four employees, invite you to come in to this “new” historic pharmacy and see what old fashioned service is all about.
