“This team seeks to root out the FEAR that is the bases for all isms whether that might be in PTSD, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, etc. It is the unconditional love of the horses that teaches humans how to UNDERSTAND and MANAGE their fears.” – Richard McMahan
Richard McMahan, MA, NHTIII, CACIII, has spent a lifetime developing new creative ways to successfully treat his clients. He completed his graduate work in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling, Vocational Evaluation with an emphasis in Chemical Dependency Counseling. He has owned a treatment center and been in the Greeley therapeutic community for 33 years as an educator, psychotherapist, certified addiction counselor, and horseman.
Richard and the Colorado Therapy Horses’ team have been eagerly working to educate the community about their ag-therapy. When addressing the human heart, the staff at Colorado Therapy Horses believe there is a horse to fit every person's needs. Whether one is seeking therapy assistance or in need of a retreat, refuge can be obtained at Colorado Therapy Horses' ranch.
Since working with the East Colorado SBDC and UNC BizHub Collaborative, Richard has completed a pro forma business plan and hosted the Weld County Commissioners in a “Meet the Horses” activity. As a direct result, the Colorado Therapy Horses is one of four nonprofits to be honored later this month at the Weld County Community Celebration on Friday, Oct 23 at 5 pm - 8 pm at THE FORT in Fort Lupton. Donations collected during this dinner will be used to care for the 16 four-legged staff members.
